DBT SKILLS
Dialectical behavior Therapy (DBT) teaches clients four sets of behavioral skills; mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness and emotion regulation. Many of our clients have historically had challenges managing intensely painful emotions. Ways of coping have included high risk behaviors, outbursts of anger, substance abuse and self harm. The first step in our individual and group therapy is to access and begin to process through intense feelings of grief, anger, shame and guilt. Our DBT Skills group empowers our women with new coping skills and practical tools to navigate life:
Radical acceptance
Reduce emotional reactivity
Pros and cons
Coping with conflict
Improving the moment
Maintaining relationships
Self-respect
Interpersonal goals
At the core of DBT is balancing opposites. It helps to bring our clients out of a black/white perspective into a both/and perspective. The DBT skills change the way our clients react to themselves, their families, and the world.
